The module “Theory of Translation” is the prerequisite for the other modules relating to translation. The coursebook for this module is thus designed to provide English-majored students with some fundamental theories and principles of translation and interpretation.

This coursebook consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the theory of translation. Chapter 2 analyzes the types and methods of translation. Chapter 3 focuses on types of language and suggests a variety of ways to transform sentences from the source language into the target one. Chapter 4 reveals different translation problems a translator may encounter and also suggests various solutions accordingly. Chapter 5 recommends some problem-solving strategies for translators. It also proposes a standard translation project management based on “ISO 17100:2015 Translation Services-Requirements for Translation Services” and provides students an opportunity to create their own translation projects and appropriate translation steps.  Chapter 6 outlines an overview of Interpretation and its three main specialized areas – legal, business, and medical interpreting. It is hoped that participants will find the course practical, useful, and enjoyable.

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

1. obtain general knowledge and principles of translation;

2. produce appropriate sentence patterns in their translations effectively;

3. successfully perform their roles as interpreters/translators to a certain extent.
